Program Highlights

The General Arts and Science - College Transfer program can be your introduction, preparation and pathway to further college diploma studies.

There are three versions of the College Transfer program. You may select from either the Business or the Law and Justice streamed versions, or if you want more flexibility, you may choose generalist studies. 

Elective courses are available in arts, business, humanitites, literature, psychology, and social sciences. Courses offered will vary from year to year. The elective list is created to provide students with a range and variety of courses to meet their interests. You will choose your elective courses with guidance from the program coordinator.

If you choose streamed studies in Business or Law and Justice, you will be eligible for entry to Common First Semester diploma programs in Business or Law and Justice, upon successful completion of the College Transfer program, and will also receive credits towards diplomas offered within these fields of study.

Streamed or not, all College Transfer graduates are well positioned for further studies, and will receive credit for some courses taken, depending on their preferred program for future study at Fleming College.

Please note: To be considered for your program of choice, your Ontario College application must be received by the Equal Consideration Application Deadline date.

The 2-semester General Arts and Science – College Transfer program will allow you to:

• Improve self-management and academic success skills to pursue college diploma studies

• Explore vocational skills in fields that interest you.

Minimum Admission Requirements

OSSD with the majority of credits at the Workplace (E) level, including English.

When Workplace (E) is the minimum course level for admission (C) and (U/C) courses are also accepted.

The General Arts and Science - College Transfer program reserves the right to use additional assessment as needed, in order to provide academic support and resources to incoming students.

Mature Students - If you are 19 years of age before classes start, and you do not possess an OSSD,  you can write the Canadian Adult Achievement Test to assess your eligibility for admission.

Communication and Learning for College and Work I integrates the study of communication, composition, academic skills and career planning and emphasizes how these areas of learning complement one another. Students will develop workplace-related skills in writing and time management, learn to set long-term educational and career goals, and explore new paths to self-knowledge.

General Arts and Science Math I

Course Number: MATH090

General Arts and Science Mathematics is a foundational mathematics course specifically designed for students of the General Arts and Science Certificate program. This course is designed to provide students with the opportunity to master the skills of basic mathematics. The topics covered will include, calculator skills, the fundamental operations of mathematics with whole numbers, fractions, ratio and proportion, percent, area and volume, reading charts and graphs and basic statistics.

American Sign Language

Course Number: LANG001

This is an introductory course designed for the student with no previous knowledge of American Sign Language (ASL). Beginners are in a classroom where no spoken conversation is allowed. Grammatical structures and facial expressions are taught according to their functions, which are then used in situations connected to everyday activities in the deaf community. The students learn how to relate to each other and build up their cross culture awareness and understanding of and respect for the deaf culture while they learn ASL.

Business Essentials - A Survival Course

Course Number: BUSN002

This course will explore the nature of business and the role of the individual within the business context. The course will help to prepare the student for the world of business by developing an understanding of the major functional aspects of a successful business. The course will also focus on a number of important business trends that will continue to affect business into the future. These include the growth and influence of international business, the role of ethics and social responsibility in business decisions, the significance of small business, the growth of the service sector, and the influence of technology on business activities. This is an approved general education course.

Canadian Government and Politics

Control, Influence & Seduction- Experience Power in Society

Course Number: GNED051

This course will examine how we experience power in our modern world and the role it plays in the resolution of conflict. We will discuss ideas of control, influence and seduction. We will examine how power resides in things like money, personality, strength, sexuality and information. We will examine current power dynamics in Canada and the world at large and see if we can create our own theory of power.

Holistic Health

Holistic Health will explore alternative, holistic health care and the treatment and prevention of disease. A research assignment will provide you with investigation skills in the area of alternative health care. Treatments and ideologies from alternative and complementary therapies such as massage therapy, body work, acupuncture and others will be presented by faculty and health care practitioners.

Intro to Political Science & Public Administration

Course Number: LAWS043

This course provides an introduction to the democratic system of governance in Canada. It includes a description of the organization, structure, interaction, and administration of the three (3) levels of government. The course will introduce and identify the daily problems and issues faced by Canadians in a political context, including public opinion and special interest groups. Major themes explored include a brief introduction to political beliefs and values, an examination of cleavages within the Canadian population, the Canadian constitution, nationalism, and political culture and spectrum. These concepts will be examined in the current forum of the daily politics that unfold during the course. Students will begin to develop research writing skills and group discussion skills. This course is a hybrid course comprised of webct and seminar components.

Introduction to Children's Literature

Course Number: GNED024

This course explores the world of literature for children from infancy to adolescence. You'll read and talk about past and present classics in children's literature, some of which may be your own favourites. Through reading, discover what makes good literature and what makes it controversial. Look at authors, illustrations, and children's literature on the web and in other media. This course meets the General Education requirements in arts and language, cultural understanding, and personal and social development.

Introduction to Improv

Course Number: GNED066

This course will introduce fundamental principles of performing improvisation. Utilizing games (similar to "Whose line is it anyway") and theatre exercises, the participants will be introduced to the basic rules that improvisers follow when performing without a script. No improv or theatrical experience is necessary to take this class! Ideal for people who would like to try something new and fun while gaining new skills for practical application in the workplace and in daily life.

Learning Through Volunteering

Course Number: GNED068

Volunteering provides an exciting opportunity to help one's community while gaining valuable vocational experience. Through experiential practice in a student-selected community agency, students will examine the foundations, philosophy, functioning and role of a volunteer organization. Students will also consider the societal trends that will impact the agency and its stakeholders in the future. The course will combine some in-class time and a total of 30 hours of volunteer work. Those students already volunteering with an agency can usually continue with that commitment for this credit. Assistance is also provided in locating a volunteer opportunity. NOTE: Students wishing to have an out-of-province or out-of-country volunteer experience considered for this credit must contact the instructor prior to the activity.

Psychology Of Sport

Course Number: GNED035

This course is designed to assist students' personal development in the areas of sport and exercise. As such, the student will be provided with the basic understanding of psychological principles as they relate to their behaviour in sport and exercise contexts. Sport psychology applies to a broad population base such as: elite athletes, children, the physically and mentally challenged, seniors, and the average participant. The focus is on the application of research findings in order to understand how participating in physical activity affects a person's psychological development.

The Human Mind Through Film

Course Number: GNED053

This course examines the intricacy of the human mind and human behaviour through the critical analysis of current popular films. It is intended to foster an appreciation of film as an art form of communication. Further, it will challenge students to develop the skills and habits of perceptive watching and discover aspects of film art that they may otherwise overlook. These goals will be accomplished through weekly screenings, lectures and discussion.

Students will have an opportunity to refine the critical thinking, writing and workplace skills they learned in Communication and Learning for College and Work I. This course allows students to develop professional documents and communication practices' reports, essays, resumes, narrative and presentations and to understand the function and nature of media. The course also provides students the opportunity to be 'self-directed' learners as they propose and carry out a major project that is the culmination of their year's work.
